Welcome to The Amateur Technologist

I have prevaricated long enough, so I have decided 2016 is the year to start my own blog.

Why now?

I use both Twitter and Facebook but have never been truly happy with them, Twitter is great for following interesting people and making short here and now statements but it is difficult to make a valid point in 140 characters.

Facebook is great for keeping up to date with family and friends but it’s too noisy and as a serious blogging medium it sucks.

Then you have the Elephant in the room” with all these social media platforms, they make money from your information (your data) they sell it, analyse it, then bombard you with stuff they think you want, and even worse if they go bust all that data you have input can be lost forever, it has happened before and no doubt will again.

So I hear you asking What can we do instead”?

Over that last few years, there has been a movement slowly gathering pace and increasing in numbers, it is called the Indieweb and it is a way of setting up your own web platform.

The IndieWeb is a people-focused alternative to the corporate web’. It is a way of posting your blog, photo’s, video’s, sound clips, in fact, anything that can be done on the popular social media sites on your own site, and if you want you can also syndicate these posts to the social media silo’s (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc.)

The important thing is that since the data originates on your site you are in control You can post anything you want, in any format you want, with no one monitoring you. In addition, you share simple readable links such as example.com/ideas. These links are permanent and will always work.

There are a number of ways you can set-up your own site, and I will be covering them in this blog, so keep watching.

The blog will also be covering my various tinkering’s with different technologies, I have always been a dabbler in technology, from an early age (back in the 1950’s building my first Crystal Set radio) to today (hacking the latest electronic gizmos).

So I hope you will join me on my various journeys into amateur technology.
